House Republicans are pushing for a base on Mars and will discuss their plan at a meeting of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee on Wednesday.
The plan is part of legislation to reauthorize NASA for two more years and the bill includes language not only advocating for a base on the surface of Mars, but also on the moon.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich infamously said during his 2012 presidential campaign that he planned to have a moon base in operation by 2020. A base on the moon could cost anywhere between $40 billion to $500 billion.
