An old PG&E power plant in California was decommissioned and demolished on Saturday, but during the implosion five spectators were injured after being hit with flying shrapnel.

According to the Associated Press, over a thousand people gathered in the early morning to watch the scheduled implosion of the power plant, which was officially decommissioned in 1986.

After structures on the property came crashing down, a police officer at the scene heard a man screaming for help and saw his leg had been severed, police saidโ€ฆ

Four other spectators were treated for minor injuries, said Kern County Fire engineer Leland Davis. All of the injured spectators were standing beyond a perimeter set up to ensure public safety, Davis said.
