Obama Renews Calls On Congress To End Shutdown, Raise Debt Limit

Obama renews calls on Congress to end shutdown, raise debt limit

President Obama said he’s willing to negotiate fiscal issues if House Republicans vote on a “clean” bill to end the government shutdown and increase the federal debt limit.

Appearing before reporters in the White House briefing room, Obama said: “Let’s stop the excuses. Let’s take a vote in the House. Let’s end this shutdown right now.”

He added that a default on the debt could “permanently increase our borrowing costs,” adding to deficits and the debt instead of decreasing them. “There’s nothing fiscally responsible about that,” he said.

Obama made the comments as House Republican leaders pressed demands for negotiations with Senate Democrats and Obama over bills to fund the government and raise the debt limit, but declined to lay out what they are seeking in the proposed talks.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would negotiate with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, once the House passed bills reopening the government and raising the debt ceiling.
