Obama: ‘Republican Shutdown’ Was Preventable

Obama- ‘Republican shutdown’ was preventable

President Barack Obama placed blame on Republicans for the first government shutdown in 17 years.

“This Republican shutdown did not have to happen. But I want every American to understand why it did happen,” Obama said during remarks in the Rose Garden. “They’ve shut down the government over an ideological crusade to deny affordable health insurance to millions of Americans.”

Congress was unable to agree on a spending measure by late Monday night, resulting in the shutdown.

Earlier, Democrats rejected an attempt by Republicans to convene a conference committee to resolve differences between House and Senate spending legislation. The Republican-led House had repeatedly attempted to put forward measures to fund the government and undo parts or all of of Obamacare, and the Democratic Senate had rejected the health care language.
