Helicopter prison escapees captured in Old Montreal

Three dangerous fugitives who made a brazen escape from a Quebec prison by helicopter two weeks ago have been captured hiding out in a luxury condominium in Old Montreal.

A Sûreté du Québec SWAT team forced open the door of the one-bedroom condo at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning and arrested the three men without incident. A resident told reporters that she heard three “loud booms” just prior to police entering the 10th floor condo at 370 St-André St., not far from the Old Port.

The escapees, Yves Denis, 35, Denis Lefebvre, 53, and Serge Pomerleau, 49, will appear in a Quebec City court on Monday where they will be charged with escaping from a provincial detention centre.

Police would not say how they eventually tracked down the fugitives because the investigation is ongoing. However, SQ spokesperson Sgt. Ronald McInnis said further arrests are likely. Police are still trying to locate the helicopter pilot.
