Hurricane Cristobal Strengthens, Off The Bahamas

Tropical Storm Cristobal strengthened into a hurricane Monday over the open waters of the Atlantic, packing winds of 75 mph as it moved north away from the Bahamas, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. Before it became a hurricane, Cristobal on Sunday hammered parts of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands with heavy rainfall and surf after rivers swept at least three people away on the Caribbean island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti. By Monday evening, the hurricane was centered roughly 660 miles southwest of Bermuda and was tracking east at 2 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.
