The Israeli military said it intercepted and shot down a Syrian aircraft over the Golan Height. The plane “infiltrated into Israeli airspace” at around 9:15 a.m., according to a statement from the Israeli military. It was a Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jet with “at least one or two pilots or navigators aboard,” said Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner. It is not yet clear how long the fighter jet was in Israeli airspace or how deeply it flew. “This is developing, we’ll have to see where it goes,” said Lerner. Since the start of the Syrian civil war three years ago, Israel has responded to errant fire. However, the announcement of the downing of the Syrian fighter jet came hours after a U.S.-led coalition began strikes against ISIS forces in Syria. Israel said it would not get involved with fighting ISIS in Syria unless the violence reaches its country.
