Breaking Boehner! Dems Help House Pass Clean Bill to Fund DHS

DHS Homeland SecurityJohn Boehner and his House caved and finally allowed a bill to the floor which will fund the Department of Homeland Security until the end of the fiscal year.

Republican Joe Walsh said on Twitter: The way Boehner did this, practically covertly, makes me want to vomit. Terrible day for the Republicans. Today, the constitution died.

The final 257-167 vote marked an end to congressional Republican efforts to use DHS funding as leverage against President Obamaโ€™s executive actions on immigration. The bill now heads to Obamaโ€™s desk.

The passage comes after days of legislative action as Congress scrambled to avert a looming DHS shutdown. For nearly two months, congressional Republicans have sought to pull at the purse strings of Obamaโ€™s executive actions and unravel the programs that would provide deportation protections to as many as 5 million undocumented immigrants.

In total, 74 House Republicans voted for the bill, joining 182 Democrats who did the same.
