SC’s crucial rainstorm is over but the flood waters may continue to rise, officials said. Statewide the epic flooding led to the breaching of 18 dams and 12 lives were lost during the course of the storm.
Officials urged residents to remain indoors if they were safe and warned that rivers may continue to rise Tuesday.
President Obama on Monday declared a major disaster in South Carolina, where unprecedented floods have killed at least 12 people and left tens of thousands stranded, many of them without running water.
“We have now entered the largest recovery program our nation offers in an almost unprecedented timeframe,” South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said in a statement issued after the president’s declaration.
“This will not be a short or easy recovery, but we will get through it, and get through it together,” she added.
