“Wow,” said Oliver in reference to Trump’s ISIS remarks. “Now clearly what he just said is absolutely absurd, but even when people try to help him reframe it, he doubled down.”
“Yes, ‘sarcasm’ is a bulls–t excuse,” Oliver responded. “It’s the douchebag’s apology.” Trump then “made it so much weirder when, later that same day, he walked his walk-back back” by claiming his speech was actually “not that sarcastic, to be honest with you.”
In response to Trump’s comments that the only way he might lose the election is if it’s “rigged,” Oliver had a word of warning: “What is really worth taking note of there, and is worth thinking about, is that he’s suggesting the election may be stolen by his opponent — and that’s actually dangerous.”
In fact, Oliver added, the danger is that while Trump is “talking the talk, he’s asking his supporters to walk the walk,” pointing out his campaign website, which asks supporters to register to be a “Trump Election Observer,” meaning to patrol Election Day to catch any wrongdoing.
Last Week Tonight’s intrepid team signed up for the position themselves online, receiving an email that read, “We are going to do everything we are legally allowed to do to stop crooked Hillary from rigging this election.”
Oliver called the claim “troubling, because I’m not sure Donald Trump knows what he’s legally allowed to do. His own attorney once had to apologize for saying ‘You can’t rape your own spouse.’”
