Russian whistleblower and former MP Denis Voronenkov, who fled to Ukraine with his wife, Maria Maksakova, in October 2016, was shot dead Thursday in the heart of Kiev. Voronenkov, 45, gave an exclusive interview to The Daily Beast last month, describing the inner workings of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government. He renounced his Russian citizenship altogether when he left the country. “Americans should realize that Putin and his guys are convinced that he spins the planet with his feet,” like a soccer ball, he said. “The FSB cyberforces are quite powerful globally. Now they do not just listen to you—they listened and recorded all my phone calls for eight years. They also attack other states.” Police said an unidentified gunman shot him near a hotel in the Ukrainian capital.
