A vehicle hit several people in north London’s Finsbury Park area early Monday, killing one and sending at least 10 to the hospital, Metropolitan Police said. The incident took place shortly after midnight near the Finsbury Park Mosque, where several worshippers were in the street after late prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. Police said they arrested the driver of the van, a 48-year-old man who was detained by bystanders, and he will have a mental health assessment soon. British Prime Minister Theresa May said police confirmed the incident is being treated as a potential terrorist attack, while London Mayor Sadiq Khan has declared it a “horrific terrorist attack on innocent people.” Mohammed Kozbar, chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque, said the Muslim community is “in shock,” and the Muslim Council of Britain called for extra security at mosques around the country.
