Alexandria police say multiple people were shot at GOP baseball practice in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria on Wednesday morning, with various reports alleging Majority Whip Steve Scalise was wounded in the violence.
Local reports allege a rifle was used and shot off more than 50 rounds, hitting Scalise.
Police are calling the incident a “multiple shooting.”
Rep. Mo Brooks, who was also on site, told CNN that he was uninjured in the event.
“It’s never easy to take seeing people around you get shot,” he said. “It’s a helpless situation.”
“The bravery they displayed—pistol against a rifle isn’t a fair fight. They exhibited tremendous bravery,” he said, breaking through tears.
Brooks said Rep. Brad Wenstrup was also on scene, and a helicopter landed in center field and took away the injured.
Brooks told CNN at least five people were wounded, “including a staffer who was shot in the leg” and two law enforcement officers.
The suspect is believed to be in custody, according to local sources.
