History of CNN

ted turner cnn

The Cable News Network (popularly called by its acronym, CNN) was founded by two leading American media proprietors Ted Turner and Reese Schonfeld, as the first 24-hour news-based television channel. Its founding made it the trailblazer of 24-hour news broadcasts. The network made its debut from its Atlanta-based headquarters on June 1, 1980, with a detailed story of the attempted assassination of the prominent civil rights leader Vernon Jordan.

Since its debut, CNN has revolutionized the news space, mainly by changing the popular notion that TV stations should only make NEWS reports during a specific time of the day. However, the CNNsโ€™ introduction of a 24-hour news broadcast service upped the game among itsโ€™ competitors as they too gradually followed suit by introducing their own dedicated, 24-hour news channels..

At the time CNN was only available for viewing in less than 3 million; however, it currently boasts of a vast network of viewers across 370 million households and hotels worldwide.

CNN Expansion

Since its debut, the network has extended its reach to many satellite and cable television providers, several specialised closed-circuit channels, and numerous websites. At the time of compiling this article, CNN has 42 bureaus (31 international, 11 domestic), hundreds of affiliated stations, and several foreign-language and regional networks across the world. Its expansion has been incredible and can truly be called the most popular news station worldwide.

CNN Controversies

Allegations of Bias

CNN has been accused of bias on multiple occasions, with some centering on the disparate treatment of democratic and republican candidates in the build-up to 2008, 2012, and 2016 U.S. presidential elections. The Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University suggests that CNN often casts a more positive light on democratic candidates.

Coverage of Trump

cnn live coverage elections 2016

CNN gave Donald Trump hours and hours of unprecedented live coverage of his 2016 presidential campaign rallies while ignoring others in the campaign including Hillary Clinton, his Democratic opponent.  They were cited for showing โ€˜an empty podiumโ€™ at Trump rallies instead of giving coverage to others.  CNN was also criticized for focusing on the Clinton email story that was a GOP strategy to paint Hillary as corrupt.

International Incidents

CNN has been accused of producing questionable reports of international events such as Operation Tailwind. Many believe that it was unfairly absent in the 2014 post-election protest in Iran and granting a propagandistic presentation of news about the Persian Gulf war.

Sexual Harassment Allegations Andrew Cuomo

In May 2021 Chris Cuomo had to apologize for consulting his brother Andrew Cuomo on topics related to the sexual harassment accusations against his brother.
