Trump’s Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Is Out After Five Days, Six Fewer Than Scaramucci

Katie Zacharia stood at the lectern on Tuesday for under 15 minutes, could not say whether the United States had stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, announced that Trump wanted his ambassador to Greece gone, and walked off. On Friday she was out. It was her only briefing.

Katie Zacharia stood at the lectern on Tuesday for under 15 minutes, could not say whether the United States had stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine, announced that Trump wanted his ambassador to Greece gone, and walked off. On Friday she was out. It was her only briefing.

The firing is the headline, but the part nobody is pricing in is how cheap the failure was to prevent. The claim that sank her, that she is a lawyer, could be checked in an afternoon on a state bar website. The White House did not check it, or did and shrugged, and when reporters asked, its answer was to point at the president’s own post calling her an attorney.

Here is the record, assembled from what the reporting has now established.

What was saidWhereWhat the record shows
“I’m a lawyer”Greg Kelly Show, Oct. 5No bar admission found in any state or D.C.
“Lawyer” in her X bioArchived as late as May 1Removed in July, after Fox had labeled her a lawyer on screen in at least 18 appearances
“General Counsel,” Fix CaliforniaLinkedIn, Jan. 2024 to Mar. 2025Tax filings show no salary and a $27,367 fundraising commission in 2024
“An attorney”Trump’s Truth Social post, Oct. 9She did not pass the California bar and has said so
Compiled from Popular Information’s review of her interviews, bios and filings, and NBC News’s reporting.

Read the last row twice. Trump’s announcement used the word attorney, the Wall Street Journal then reported she had sat the California exam and not passed, and a senior administration official confirmed it. She told Sean Hannity the result was “inconsequential” because she expected to live in China, and that she never retook it. Legal experts, as ABC and NBC reported, say “attorney” means licensed, and she is not.

Then the arithmetic. Anthony Scaramucci lasted 11 days as communications director in 2017. Zacharia lasted five days as the outlets count it, which is 45 percent of a Scaramucci (5 divided by 11), and Scaramucci noticed, posting “Records are made to be broken.” Axios called her the shortest-tenured press secretary in modern history. It is a record, and it belongs to this White House.

Trump’s own account of the exit is a small masterpiece of the form. He said the media had treated her “pretty nastily,” that he would let her decide, and that in her position he would “reconsider.” A senior official told reporters she is moving to a role to be announced later, while advisers told CNN she was fired. We think the advisers have it right. Nobody is moved to a role “to be announced later” because the job went well, and “reconsider” is how this president fires someone while keeping the option to say he did not.

The press office she was meant to run is also not a normal press office anymore. The White House has been shutting reporters out of the building while a court sorts out who may enter, so the one job in the building that exists to answer to the press corps was being filled by someone with a résumé the press corps could pick apart within days. That is the failure. It is not that she misdescribed a law degree. It is that a vetting process which cannot confirm a bar admission has no business confirming anything else a podium-holder will be asked to stand behind.

One caution on what is established. The firing itself comes from advisers speaking to CNN, and the White House has not said so on the record, so treat the word “fired” as reported and the five days as confirmed. The Campaign for Accountability has asked the State Bar of California to investigate whether she broke the law by calling herself a lawyer while unlicensed. That complaint is a request, not a finding.

What happens next is simple enough to watch. Zacharia was the sixth person to hold the job in this administration, and the next one will be introduced the same way, with a post and a title. The only question worth asking is whether someone looks them up first.
