The free burger is never the product. Your phone is.
National Cheeseburger Day lands on Friday, September 18, and the chains are handing out free and dollar burgers from Wednesday through the weekend. Almost every roundup lists them alphabetically, which hides the one thing you need to know before you order: what each deal asks you to give up.
So we sorted them by the catch instead.
We counted the 39 offers on TODAY’s National Cheeseburger Day list. At least 13 require a rewards account or an app. The biggest giveaways, the genuinely free ones, sit almost entirely in that group.
That is not an accident. It is the design.
What the Free Burger Is Actually Buying
A Double Cheeseburger costs a chain very little to make. A new app install with your location, your order history and push notifications turned on is worth far more.
The minimum purchase does the rest of the work. You came for a free burger, you spent a dollar or three on fries and a drink, and the chain now knows when you eat and what you add.
Scale that across millions of phones and you can see why the deals exist. Traffic is soft. McDonald’s already posted its steepest U.S. sales decline since the pandemic, and lower-income diners are the ones pulling back first.
A holiday that nobody really celebrates is a cheap excuse to get them back through the door, and then to keep them there with a notification next Tuesday.
None of that makes the burgers bad. Our view is simple: take the free food, and be honest with yourself about the trade.
Four Free or Near-Free Burgers That Run Through an App – Download and Pig Out Today
These are the best raw value on the day. Each one wants an account first.
- 1. McDonald’s. A free Double Cheeseburger on September 18 for MyMcDonald’s Rewards members who spend at least $1 in the app. Food Bible’s breakdown of the terms notes it is one per person at participating U.S. locations, and the dollar can go on a drink or a snack.
- 2. Burger King. Royal Perks members get a free Bacon Cheeseburger with a $3 purchase on Friday. It is one day of a week-long run: Thursday’s freebie is a hamburger, and chicken nuggets and a chicken sandwich follow over the weekend.
- 3. Dairy Queen. A free single Original Cheeseburger Stackburger with a $1 purchase in the DQ app, running through September 18.
- 4. Smashburger. Any single Smashburger for $1 for SmashRewards members on Friday. It works in restaurant, on app pickup orders and on the chain’s own delivery.
Notice the pattern. The free item is fixed, the minimum is small, and the account is permanent.
Two Codes Worth Typing
Promo codes sit in the middle. You still order online, but you are buying a meal at a discount rather than trading an install for a giveaway.
- 5. Five Guys. Buy any burger and get one of equal or lesser value free with the code BOGOBURGER. According to Five Guys’ own announcement, it runs September 16 through 18 on the app or website, for pickup or Five Guys delivery only. It will not work at the counter or through third-party apps. It is live today.
- 6. Shake Shack. A ShackBurger or Cheeseburger for $5 with any purchase on Friday using the code BURGERDAY, in the app, on the website or in the restaurant.
The Five Guys deal is the strongest of the whole list if you are feeding two people. Five Guys burgers are not cheap, and a second one free cuts the bill nearly in half.
4 Deals That Only Ask You to Show Up
These are the ones we would point you to first. No account, no download, no location permissions.
- 7. White Castle. Buy one Cheese Slider, get one free, in store on Friday.
- 8. Buffalo Wild Wings. Buy one regularly priced cheeseburger, get the second free, dine-in on Friday. It excludes lunch combos and the kids’ menu.
- 9. Checkers and Rally’s. A Big Buford for $3 at participating locations on Thursday and Friday. You can use it today.
- 10. Wahlburgers. Half off the Our Burger in restaurant, but only on Thursday, September 17. This is the one that expires first.
The discounts are smaller here. You also walk out owing nobody anything.
How to Take the Burger Without Giving Away the Rest
If you want the app deals, you can keep most of the trade on your side.
- Sign up with an email you do not use for anything important.
- Decline location tracking and push notifications when the app asks. The offer does not need either.
- Spend the minimum on something you would have bought anyway, like a drink.
- Delete the app on Saturday if you are not a regular.
Participation varies by location on nearly every one of these, so check the app or call ahead before you drive. Food Network’s deal roundup and TODAY’s list both carry the long tail of regional chains, from Farmer Boys to Krystal, if none of the ten are near you.
If you are counting every dollar right now, you are not alone. Walmart’s slowest sales growth in six years says a lot of households are doing the same math.
The question worth asking on Saturday is not whether you got a free burger. It is how many of those apps are still on your phone in December, and how many times they have asked you to come back.
