Eight Months Into the Iran War, Vance Says It Is Why Republicans Lost Congress

JD Vance wrote that 'the reason we lost is the war' and Trump called it 'largely true,' two months after Vance would not call it a war.

Red and blue campaign yard signs lie toppled on wet grass in front of the lit U.S. Capitol dome at dusk, with two jet contrails crossing the sky.

JD Vance wrote on X on Wednesday that “the reason we lost is the war,” and Donald Trump called that “largely true” hours later, two days after telling Fox News “this isn’t a war.”

  • Vance said the main problem was that “many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026.”
  • He challenged critics to argue the war was worth “losing the Senate for the next 6 years,” and called that “at least honest.”
  • His four-point plan for the party: end the war, focus on cost of living and inflation, put America First, and change the relationship with Israel.
  • Trump, at the White House, said he would “do it again” and “would have done nothing differently.”
  • Vance referred to Trump only as “the president.” The New York Times reported, as BBC relays it, that he showed Trump the post first; we have not confirmed that independently.

Sept. 3Vance, White House briefing“I wouldn’t call it a war. Right now, there is no active shooting.”
Sept. 4Trump, Oval Office“I call it a military conflict because it’s small potatoes for us.”
Nov. 2Trump, Fox News“This isn’t a war. This is a very soft war.”
Nov. 3Trump, Wall Street Journal“Iran was a piece of it.”
Nov. 4Vance, X“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.”

The Word He Declined in September

Read the table top to bottom. The AP story that carries Vance’s September line puts the toll at 18 dead service members and more than $37.5 billion spent.

The word he declined that day is the one he now uses to explain the defeat.

Vance says the honest argument is that the war was worth the Senate. We think the honest move was calling it a war in September, with 18 service members already dead.

He also leaned on the president. “The president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote, but the Tuesday quote on record is that Iran “was a piece of it.” A piece became “the reason” in Vance’s post and “largely true” in Trump’s reply a day later.

We read this as choreography, not rebellion: the president saw the post first, and his answer is that he would do it all again. Analysts quoted by BBC read it as Vance distancing himself from Trump ahead of 2028, which may be so, but it changes nothing about who paid for the war.

The war did not pause for the election either: U.S. strikes hit Qeshm Island the night before the vote. Vance has named the cost, and the Congress voters just handed to Democrats is the place where it comes due.
